Why Pray for the Peace of Jerusalem? Who Is The Messiah?
Israel's Right to the Land Is It Jewish to Believe in Jesus?
Who Is The Messiah? When Will He Come? How Will We Recognize Him?
Who has believed our message?
And to whom has the arm of the L-rd been revealed?
"For He grew up before Him like a tender shoot, and like a root out of parched ground; He has no stately form or majesty that we should look upon Him, nor appearance that we should be attracted to Him. He was despised and forsaken of men, a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief; and like one from whom men hide their face, He was despised and we did not esteem Him. Surely our griefs He himself bore, and our sorrows He carried; Yet we ourselves esteemed Him stricken, smitten of G-d, and afflicted. But He was pierced through for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities: the chastening for our well-being fell upon Him, and by His scourging we are healed. All of us like sheep have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way; but the L-rd has caused the iniquity of us all to fall on Him." Isaiah 53:1-6
All through the bible, the Hebrew prophets spoke of the coming of a great leader. He would be sent by G-d and would be called His Anointed One, The Messiah.
The current interest in the state of Israel awakens renewed interest in the apocalyptic person of the Messiah. Amidst all the speculation, how can we identify the One spoken of?
The following are eight descriptions that identify Him:
- He must be of the seed of Abraham. Moses recorded the promise of G-d to Abraham in this way: "Through your offspring all nations on earth will be blessed." (Genesis 22:18, Gen. 12:3, Galatians 3:8-9)
- He must be of the tribe of Judah. While on his deathbed, the patriarch Jacob (Israel) said this to his son Judah: "The scepter will not depart from Judah, nor the ruler's staff from between his feet, until He comes to whom it belongs and the obedience of the nations is His." (Gen. 49:10)
- He must be of the house of David. In Isaiah's prophecy of the Messiah, we read: "Of the increase of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David's throne and over His kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever. The zeal of the L-rd Almighty will accomplish this." (Isaiah 9:7, 2 Sam. 7:16)
- He must be born of a virgin. The prophet Isaiah wrote: "Therefore the L-rd Himself shall give you a sign; Behold the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call His name Immanuel." (Isaiah 7:14)
- He must be born in Bethlehem as foretold by the prophet Micah: "But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are small among the clans of Judah, out of you will come for me one who will be ruler over Israel, whose origins are from of old, from ancient times." (Micah 5:2)
- He must be Divine. Isaiah clearly stated this when he wrote: "He will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty G-d, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace." (Isaiah 9:6, Zech. 14:3-4)
- He must come and be "cut off" before the Temple's destruction in 70 CE. (Dan. 9:24-26)
- He will be a light to all nations. (Isaiah 49:6-7, Luke 2:32)
Who is the Messiah? The only one who meets these requirements and more is Yeshua (Jesus). As a devout Jew, Yeshua lived a remarkable life. He astounded the Jewish teachers of the Torah with His insight, wisdom, and authority. By His words and works He proved Himself to be G-d's Anointed One.
